Silicone Sealant

A silicone sealant is a kind of adhesive that is used in many different applications. From simple labels to airplanes, from kitchen sink to skyscrapers, silicone sealants are made to make our life simpler and easier. They are rubber-like material, may be viscous, which is composed of silicone, together with other elements such as hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. Their paste consistency allows them to fill gaps between substrates. They are non-reactive and able to withstand extreme temperatures.

Silicone sealants are made to bond different materials together with intense power or exceptional lightness. Their ability to bond even the most difficult to combine materials including glass, metal and stone is due to their chemical properties. They are made to be a permanent or temporary adhesion.
Silicone sealant comes in variety of forms. There are sealants that can be purchased in two-component addition, while there are some that can be bought as a single product. Two-component sealants require a manual mixing of two compounds to produce a sealant. These two compounds are called the activator and the base. Usually, the activator is combined to the other and mixed for a certain period of time before applying. On the other hand, the single sealant requires no mixing. It comes in a package and can be readily used when needed. An example of this product is the silicone RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) sealant. However, RTV sealants start to cure once they are exposed to air, so it’s necessary that you work quickly when using this product.
Using a silicone sealant can provide you numbers of benefits. Compared to other kinds of adhesive, they are more flexible and their versatility makes them the best choice of many users. The main advantage of silicone sealants is their long-term performance. Even when exposed to intense heat or low temperature, the sealant will remain its mechanical properties (elasticity, tear resistance) and doesn’t become brittle. Another advantage is that they are not reactive to any chemicals such as acids, bases, and solvents. Due to their inert property, they are widely used in medical applications. They are also water-resistant, making them useful to block water passage or leaks. Their electrical conductivity makes them also suitable for any electrical applications.
Since they are becoming popular in many consumers, silicone sealants can be found mostly in every area in a typical home. Commonly, you can see them in automotive applications, such as in engine gaskets; kitchen applications such as in sink, cookware, food storages; garments including sportswear and footwear; electronics; medical devices; home appliances and furniture; etc.
Usually, silicone sealants are also used in industrial purposes to seal machinery and other equipments to avoid leaks and any unnecessary passage. They are also used in different wiring applications as an adhesive due to their non-flammable property. Since also they are able to withstand extreme temperature, such as intense heat and freeze, they are mostly utilized as an insulator and fire barriers in many equipments. In short, a silicone sealant is a very powerful adhesive that can perform several functions at once.
